    Are these rats trash?
I just visited an expo yesterday and picked up a couple frozen feeders. On the drive home they were in a cooler bag with ice, but we broke down and the smaller ones didn't stay solid, but stayed cold.

When I got home they went to the freezer, as I was hoping they were still save-able. Went to double check tonight and my freezer is stuck at refrigeration temps, and the rats were melted. However they stayed refrigerated the entire time. They are now in a working freezer.

Should I trash them? My snakes are going to be a lot hungrier than usual by the time I can aquire more. I just got them, they were always cold and it has been a day max. What do you think?

You can try them- if the snakes reject them, take their word for it. They're probably not spoiled if they've remained at least cold (like 40*), but you'll have a loss of quality if re-frozen & then re-thawed to feed. No harm trying but just don't be surprised if they fall apart, etc., after re-freezing. Sorry for your rotten luck- vehicle break-downs are miserable even without losing food & supplies.

I will freeze a thawed feeder only once. After that it is trashed. By trashed I mean given to one of my garage disposal snakes.

Sorry for your bad luck, don't ride in a plane this week!

Rats should be fine if used in a few months.

Just to add to this post, since it's along the same lines...

I have a dedicated freezer for my feeders. Any reputable alarms that I can place in a freezer that would alert me on my phone of either the current temps or when it goes above a certain temp? And, of course, can sustain the cold temps of a freezer.

There's probably an expensive alert product for this somewhere, but the cheap way to be sure your freezer hasn't thawed is to keep a small jar of water in the freezer; once the water in it is frozen, put a penny on top of the ice, & leave it in the freezer. If your freezer is off long enough for things to thaw, the penny will sink into the water in the jar so you'll know at a glance if it's no longer on top.

These would allow that. I'm sure there are others out there. I just did a quick search to find these. You just want one with a probe so the actual device is not inside the freezer.

That's a unique and good idea. Will have to do that as well.

I'm sure there are other ones as well. This one looks promising.
