Replace the screen top with plexiglass. Drill a few holes for ventilation. That setup is going to be way too dry for a BP.

I would put a UTH under it to create a basking spot instead of trying to heat it from the top.

In the tub, it's very easy to maintain. That's one of the main benefits of keeping snakes in tubs. That and they're easy to clean. In the terrarium, it's harder. Right now, it's way too low, due to the central heating sucking all the humidity from the air. I don't worry about it though. If he needs humidity, he can hang out in the tub.

You can't set a RHP on the screen top. RHPs can't sit on anything while they're on. They'll malfunction. And I wouldn't fasten the RHP to the screen. The screen's not strong enough. The screws would tear through. You could replace the screen with plywood or plexi and fasten the RHP to that. That's what I would do. Replacing the screen would have the added benefit of making humidity much easier to maintain.

You don't need to be concerned about the RHP burning your BP. Lots of keepers use RHPs safely and their snakes can climb just as well or better than your BP. RHPs don't get hot enough to burn from the kind of exploratory touching they receive when properly installed.

It works for me. When I kept my BP in a Sterilite tub, I used newspaper because it's cheap and easy to maintain. It didn't matter that it didn't look nice because you couldn't see in the tub anyway. When I built the enclosure above, I needed something that looked better. I decided on repticarpet because it's similarly cheap and easy to maintain. I think the reason you don't see it more often is that it doesn't look as nice as the naturalistic substrates, so keepers that use it don't post pics.

I've never heard of a snake getting poisoned by newspaper ink. I wouldn't feed it to a snake, but I think it's safe to let it crawl across it.

I understand that virtually all newspapers (at least in the U.S.?) are now using non-toxic soy ink*. But while it's safe for snakes to crawl on, it's slippery & offers no traction, which seems to stress many snakes, & also, feces & urates just lay there on top of it, so snakes end up crawling thru it. :( With other substrates, that doesn't happen to the same extent. For those reasons I've never used newspaper for snakes, & wouldn't want to.

*When it comes to recycling clean paper, I give it my sniff test- anything with an odor is not shredded for snake litter by me- I assume that those inks -typically the ads inserted into newspapers- are not using safe inks when they give off chemical odors, so I'd never use or shred those. I mostly shred clean mail & business papers- never the outer mailing envelopes either, because you don't know what they could be exposed to in transit, in the mail stream- even though the chances are remote. ;)

Not sure who you're asking :confusd: but as far as indoor/outdoor carpeting, once it's dry, it's holds no humidity the way the mulch-type substrates do- it's not that thick. That's not a deal-breaker for me for 2 reasons: Most of my snakes do not need high humidity (& none are BPs), but for those that need more humidity or just enjoy it, I prefer to use humid hides rather than having all the substrate being damp. I live in a humid area anyway.

This is why it's good to discuss the various options here- the same things don't work best for everyone, in every location, or in every situation.
