Power outage planning
Any ideas of what to do if the power goes out for an extended period of time? Just got a thunderstorm warning and the idea popped into my head...What if the power goes out??

Re: Power outage planning
Okay smart aleck, I meant for me, not for someone that has access to major gas powered appliances. I live in a condo less than 30 mins from downtown Chicago for God's sakes. Now if I lived near my P's in the Sierra mountains in CA that would be different.

Re: Power outage planning
You might be able to buy some battery power back up systems, however they are expensive and have a limited run time I think.

Re: Power outage planning
ok sorry, i have access to generators at work. lol
how about lots of heat packs, pack your animals in an insulated box like you would ship them in. they could go a couple of days or more with access to water.

Re: Power outage planning
Dawn, since we live in northern Michigan and out by a lake, we've thought about this too so just to be safe this is what we are looking at ordering.

Have never ordered from this company so I'm not sure of their quality or customer service.

Re: Power outage planning
Or there's LLLReptile.com
They have pretty good products, and if you're worried about keeping them insulated for an extended period of time, they also have shipping boxes.
For some reason I can't get the link up here, but if you go to their catalog and then to reptile supplies, and then down at the bottom to shipping supplies, they have cold pacs, heat pacs, and shipping containers.

Re: Power outage planning
For heat packs, I usually hit up walmart right after the weather starts warming up after winter.....check the hunting area....they usually mark them down pretty cheap.

Re: Power outage planning
How about a UPS(uninterrupted power supply)? THe kinds used for a computer. That might be worth looking into. You should be able to get one for cheap these days.

That'll get you 5-15 minutes. Not good for an extended outage in winter conditions. For about $60 I purchased a power inverter. It hooks up to my car battery and powers about 1500 watts worth. Its a good option for those that cant or wont buy a generator. Do a google search for power inverters. I live in Florida so the snakes were fine but during the hurricane this things powered a fan, tv, dvd player, lamp, etc. Lifesaver!!
