Lizards are always a ton more work compared to snakes, just the need for daily feeding can be a huge increase in the workload. If you want to try one out though, a beardie is definitely a good choice for a first. Another good choice would be a leopard gecko, as the setup and feeding is a lot simpler.
This hands down...and to add to it any lizard will be more work than a snake, but they are more intelligent and IMO rewarding. What you really need to look at is the requirements for different lizards. They are active animals that will burrow, climb, dig, etc. Are you willing to keep a steady supply of bugs or would you rather a lizard that didn't need insects in their diet?
