    UTH Regulation

Hey guys I have a way to regulate your UTH without a tstat(if you want). But I recommend this not be a permanent fix! Tstats do the job right and this plan should only be used when you don't have a tstat yet, but are getting one. Well what I did was take out the substrate on the hot side and put some toilet paper (you can use paper towel) on the bottom of the tank on top of the UTH, about 2 pieces for me, but it may be more or less for you, whatever works. I then put the substrate back on and the temps were a perfect 93 degrees! Everyone who has a UTH knows that when a UTH goes unregulated it gets to a blazing 130 degrees but with this plan you can get to the temps you need it to be at! You can put more substrate for it to get cooler, or take away some to let the temperature rise. And since ball pythons like to bury themselves under the substrate, your snake won't ever get in direct contact with the UTH. I think this is a way for people who just got their Ball Python to have the correct temps until they get a thermostat. Again, this is not a permanent fix, get a tstat!

What kind of UTH are yall using. The one I have doesn't get that hot, I can keep my hand on it full blast and it's not that temperature.

Sorry Christian that doesn't really sound like a reliable way to control a UTH even if only for a temporary application. If someone cannot afford $10 for a dimmer switch as temporary means to control a UTH until they can afford a thermostat; they probably shouldn't be owning an exotic pet in the first place.

Dimmer switch is like $5 at lowes. I'm still curious as to what UTH yall are using. I know for a fact mine doesn't get that high. Also I agree with you about that not being reliable.

And also since most bp's burrow, they could easily get through toilet paper.
However, I've heard of someone using a heavy ceramic tile over the UTH. I don't know if it really works, but hey, people try some crazy things.

...At least toilet paper would absorb the pee-pee.

(BTW, I did exactly that add/reduce substrate method while waiting for our online ordered ReptiTemp to arrive. It's a PITA, but it does work for those few days until online orders arrive.)

My zoo-med got to 120 [f] once..of course, this was before the thermostat arrived.
